Angels have been grouped into nine categories, from lowest to highest:
1. Angel:- A divine and supernatural messenger from a deity, or other divine entity. ▼ show

2. Virtue:- (obsolete) The inherent power of a god, or other supernatural being. [13th-19th c.]

3. Archangel:- A powerful angel that leads many other angels, but is still loyal to a deity. (Judeo-Christian examples: Gabriel, Michael, Raphael, Uriel).
In Christian angelology, an archangel is an angel from the third level or choir of angels, ranked above virtues and below powers.

4. Power:- (biblical) In Christian angelology, an intermediate level of angels, ranked above archangels, but exact position varies by classification scheme.
5. Principality:- (theology) A spiritual being, specifically in Christian angelology, the fifth level of angels, ranked above powers and below dominions. [from 16th c.]
6. Dominion:- (Biblical tradition) An order of angel in Christian angelology, ranked above angels and below thrones. ▲ hide

7. Throne:- 1611, Bible (KJV), Genesis, 41:40:
Thou shalt be ouer my house, and according vnto thy word shall all my people be ruled: only in the throne will I be greater then thou.

8. Cherub:- A winged creature represented over 90 times in the Bible as attending on God, later seen as the second highest order of angels, ranked above thrones and below seraphim. First mention is in Genesis 3:24
9. Seraph:- (biblical) A six-winged angel; the highest choir or order of angels in Christian angelology, ranked above cherubim, and below God. A detailed description can be found at the beginning of Isaiah chapter 6
